In a sign of how seriously the UK is taking the threat of ransomware, more than half of the companies it surveyed said they were concerned about the risk of the malware.
The findings come as the Government launched an emergency cybersecurity plan for tech companies in the wake of the cyber attack.
“We are on edge and I can’t tell you how much we are concerned,” said Rob Knecht, chief technology officer at the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
“The reality is, the threat is so large it could wipe the world off the face of the Earth.”
A cyber attack by a group calling itself the Dragon Army has taken the lives of at least five people across Europe, with many others left injured.
Cyber experts believe the attack is a precursor to a more widespread attack, which is thought to be coming from Russia.
